| Who is a good fit for the Brideun Learning Model? |
|
A large percentage of our gifted and twice-exceptional (2E) students come to Brideun Learning Communities labeled with diagnoses such as Asperger's Syndrome, high-functioning autism, bipolar disorder (mood disorder), ADD or ADHD, dyslexia, sensory integration disorder, auditory processing disorder, visual and/or visual-motor processing speed deficits, and/or speech and language delays. We find that these students, most of whom are visual-spatial
learners and divergent thinkers, thrive in our alternative learning program,
. The Brideun model has also had great success with children who have
head injuries (traumatic brain injuries). Children with severe, violent or aggressive behavior do not fit at Brideun. The Brideun Learning Communities are able to meet the needs of these many different types of learners because we teach through holistic, multi-modal, strength-based teaching techniques that benefit all children. However we find that the majority of students are those unique, alternative-minded individuals who despite good intellectual ability, do not find success in traditional academic settings. Often, children come to the Briduen environments traumatized by other school experiences. Many students have been over-medicated, in an effort to make them fit in to the traditional school setting. While medication may be necessary for some, we find that many children can function well with less, or without medications, when the school setting is a fit. |
